Exactly a year ago, on June 9, 2024, Jasprit Bumrah etched another memorable chapter in his T20 World Cup legacy with a match-winning spell against Pakistan at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. In what turned out to be one of the most thrilling low-scoring encounters of the tournament, Bumrah’s brilliance turned the tide in India’s favour and showcased once again why he’s considered one of the best death bowlers in the world.

The match began with Pakistan winning the toss and opting to bowl first. On a pitch that offered bounce and uneven pace, India struggled with the bat and were bundled out for a modest 119. Amid the collapse, it was Rishabh Pant’s gritty 42 off 31 balls that gave the innings some semblance of fight, as the rest of the batting order fell cheaply.

Pakistan’s chase began steadily with Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan navigating the initial overs cautiously, reaching 26 for no loss. However, Bumrah sparked the breakthrough by dismissing Babar for 13, shifting the momentum. Even with wickets falling, Pakistan kept their hopes alive at 80 for 3, needing just 40 runs from the final 36 balls.

But Bumrah had other plans. In the 15th over, he produced a gem of a delivery that stayed low and crashed into Rizwan’s stumps, breaking Pakistan’s backbone. That moment marked the beginning of a dramatic collapse. Pakistan lost their final seven wickets for just 33 runs, unable to withstand India’s relentless pressure. Bumrah finished with sensational figures of 3 for 14, including 15 dot balls, suffocating the opposition with his precision.

Hardik Pandya chipped in with key wickets of Fakhar Zaman and Shadab Khan, while Axar Patel’s miserly 18th over proved pivotal. India’s defence of 119 equalled the lowest total ever successfully defended in T20 World Cup history.
Speaking after the game, Jasprit Bumrah said, “It feels really good. We knew we were under par, so we had to be extremely disciplined. I just focused on execution and hitting the seam. The crowd support felt like home—it gave us a lot of energy. We’ll stick to our process and keep giving our best.”
