Outgoing Women’s Coach WV Raman Congratulates Newly-appointed Ramesh Powar

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced Ramesh Powar as the new head coach of Women’s cricket team. He will replace WV Raman at this post, who led Indian team to the finals of the T20 World Cup final in 2020. Both Raman and Powar were amongst the 8 candidates that were shortlisted by Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) led by Madan Lal.

The interviews were lasted over two days and Madan Lal, Sulakshana Naik and RP Singh decided to select Ramesh Powar for the role.

Meanwhile, WV Raman was quick to congratulate the in-coming head coach Powar on Twitter. He wrote, “All the best Ramesh Powar with the BCCI Women in this spell. Look forward to seeing the girls soar under your guidance.”

Powar’s first task will be against England. Indian women’s team is scheduled to play one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is in England, starting with one-off Test in Bristol from June 16. The selectors will announce the team in a few days and the women’s team will leave for England along with the men’s team after completing their quarantine.

A former international, Powar played 2 Tests and 31 ODIs for India. Post announcing his retirement from cricket, he took up cricket coaching and is an ECB Level 2 certified coach and has also attended BCCI-NCA Level 2 coaching course. A former coach of the Indian Women’s Team from July-November 2018, it was under him that India qualified for the semi-final of the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup in 2018 and also won 14 T20I matches in a row.

He recently coached the Mumbai senior team that won the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has worked at the National Cricket Academy as a Bowling Coach.

Ajay Ratra, Hrishikhesh Kanitkar, Mamtha Maben, Devika Vaidya, former chairman of selectors Hemlatha Kala and former assistant coach with the team Suman Sharma were the other 6 candidates interviewed by the CAC.
