Suresh Raina, the Indian cricketer, found himself facing a daunting challenge ahead of the inaugural World T20 in 2007. A knee injury left him bedridden for months, putting his career in jeopardy and leading to his exclusion from the historic Indian squad that went on to win the T20 world championship in South Africa.

The injury took a toll not just physically, but mentally as well. Raina revealed the mental stress he experienced during that time, saying, “My family asked me to focus on recovery and not worry about the loan I had taken. The other thing that was eating me up was if I will ever get a chance again because the competition was so tough and the 2007 T20 World Cup was coming up.”

Despite the challenges, Suresh Raina found support in his family, who encouraged him to remain positive. He decided to leave his fate in the hands of God and cherish the opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones. Raina expressed gratitude, saying, “With the love and blessing of my family, I waded through the choppy waters quite easily.”

 

With a successful international career that spanned 18 Tests, 226 ODIs, and 78 T20Is, Raina retired from international cricket in 2020. He was a vital member of the Indian squad that secured victory in the 2011 ODI World Cup. However, during his recovery, the thought of not being able to play for India again crossed his mind.

Suresh Raina shared his concerns, saying, “I was stressed about the financial position that I and the family were in, especially after I took a loan. And if I don’t play again, it would all be over.”

Yet, Suresh Raina maintained his focus on strengthening his knee, believing that everything else would fall into place. He emerged from the challenging period, making a remarkable comeback and leaving an indelible mark on Indian cricket.
