Paras Mhambrey’s tenure with the Indian cricket team ended after the T20 World Cup 2024. Mhambrey, who had come in with the coaching staff after ex-India batter Rahul Dravid was appointed as the head coach in November 2021, majorly guided the Indian bowlers through several key tournaments.

Since 2021, Mhambrey has been holding important positions in managing India’s bowling team in crucial events. The T20 World Cup 2022 and the ODI World Cup 2023, he is credited to, among all odds, having toiled hard to make good the Indian bowling attack.

A major part of Mhambrey’s tenure was spent without ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who was laid low by an injury. In a recent chat with Venkata Krishna B, Mhambrey shared how he dealt with the situation and how Bumrah’s absence affected them.

“The first thing is acceptance. We accepted that he wasn’t going to be around. Of course, we were monitoring all that he was doing and the coordination with the NCA (National Cricket Academy) was really commendable. He came in and again got injured… and it was definitely not easy because we were looking at him for the WTC (World Test Championship) final, where conditions were just apt for him,” Paras Mhambrey explained.

Paras Mhambrey elaborated on how it also helped other bowlers come up in his absence, especially Mohammed Siraj. Further, Mhambrey lays on more positives about such a development: the rise of the competition in the team gives everyone a dose of confidence.

“It could have been a different story altogether if he was available. But we knew how long he would be out, and we had the World Cup around the corner,” the coach explained. “We had a clear pathway and it was to gradually get him back into the fold by starting with T20s. At the same time, it allowed us to develop someone like Siraj. He took the responsibility and took charge of the attack. It was good to see some competition for places in that bowling group.”.

It is this strategic approach and adaptability to tough circumstances that Mhambrey has brought to the entire operation that really can leave an indelible mark upon an Indian bowling lineup, preparing it more than adequately for the future, even without main men like Bumrah.
