India found themselves on the back foot from the beginning after conceding a significant lead in the first innings against Australia. Chasing a daunting target of 444 in the fourth innings, led by Rohit Sharma, India had 7 wickets in hand with 280 runs remaining on Day 4. The hopes of the team rested on the experienced duo of Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane. However, their efforts fell short as India suffered a crushing 209-run defeat.

India batters lacked patience in WTC final

While Rohit Sharma (43), Virat Kohli (49), and Ajinkya Rahane (46) showed promise with their starts, they couldn’t convert them into substantial scores. The repeated failures of the Indian team in the knockout stages of ICC events have sparked discussions among experts and fans. Joining the conversation, former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel shared his assessment after India’s loss in the WTC Final.

Patel took to Twitter to highlight how Indian batsmen are not accustomed to batting for long periods as home Tests often conclude in less than three days. “With the way this #WTCFinal has ended, I feel one problem we have to fix is our batters spending sufficient time out in the middle. At home, we are used to wrapping up Tests in less than 3 days on rank turners, and our batters don’t end up scoring the big hundreds,” Parthiv Patel expressed on Twitter.

He further emphasized the need for Indian batsmen to adapt to spending long hours at the crease. Patel believed that this aspect was missing in the final and posed the question to his followers, seeking their opinions on the matter.

After India’s loss in the WTC final, both Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid shared their reactions. Rohit suggested that the WTC Final should be determined through a three-match series between the finalists. He also proposed the possibility of playing the final in locations other than England and at a different time of the year. On the other hand, coach Dravid expressed his belief that the time allocated for practice ahead of the final was insufficient.

The Indian players will now enjoy a one-month break before their next assignment, a tour of the West Indies commencing on July 12. The multi-format series will feature two Tests, three ODIs, and five T20Is.
