Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins has been fined INR 12 lakh after his side maintained a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 clash against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, May 12. The penalty added to a disappointing night for SRH, who suffered a crushing 82-run defeat in a crucial encounter that impacted the top of the IPL 2026 points table.

The over-rate offence also had an immediate impact during the match, with SRH forced to keep only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle in the closing overs of Gujarat’s innings. The Titans capitalised on the fielding restriction and posted a competitive total of 168/5 before producing a dominant bowling performance to dismantle Hyderabad for just 86 runs.
This marked SRH’s first slow over-rate offence of the IPL 2026 season under the league’s Code of Conduct. However, the Hyderabad-based franchise is not the only team to face disciplinary scrutiny this year. Earlier in the season, opener Abhishek Sharma was fined 25 percent of his match fee and handed a demerit point after displaying visible dissent following his dismissal against Kolkata Knight Riders.

The BCCI has intensified its disciplinary measures throughout IPL 2026, taking strict action against players, support staff, and franchises over protocol breaches. Riyan Parag also landed in controversy earlier this season after being spotted vaping inside the dressing room during a live broadcast. The Rajasthan Royals’ stand-in captain was fined heavily and handed a demerit point.

In response to multiple off-field controversies, the BCCI recently issued a formal advisory to all 10 IPL franchises. The board warned teams about repeated misconduct and protocol violations that could damage the league’s image and create serious legal or security concerns.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia reportedly emphasised that franchises must remain vigilant regarding unauthorised access to team hotels and player areas. The advisory also highlighted concerns about potential honey-trapping and urged teams to strengthen internal security protocols for the remainder of IPL 2026.
