Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, had high praise for India’s premier pacer, Jasprit Bumrah, following the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). However, while Cummins acknowledged Bumrah’s stellar bowling performance, he didn’t feel much sympathy for the Indian vice-captain, who ended up on the losing side.
In a contest that was both thrilling and intense, India’s Jasprit Bumrah put in an exceptional performance, despite a lack of support from his teammates. Australia emerged victorious by a commanding margin of 184 runs, taking a 2-1 lead in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Jasprit Bumrah, however, was left to shoulder the majority of the bowling workload, having bowled nearly 53 overs across both innings, often operating with little rest. Despite the fatigue, Bumrah’s effort never dipped, and he continued to bowl with relentless intensity. In the first innings, while Bumrah did concede some runs, he managed to take 4 wickets, keeping India in the game.

But it was his performance in the second innings that really stood out. With India needing a breakthrough, Bumrah responded with a five-wicket haul, single-handedly attempting to bring his team back into the contest. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, India’s batting collapse saw them fall short, unable to chase down Australia’s target.
Acknowledging Bumrah’s contribution, Pat Cummins praised the Indian pacer, calling him a major threat. Cummins said, “Yeah, he’s obviously a really good bowler in great form. He’s been their most influential player. He’s made it difficult for us at times.” Cummins continued, “I thought all their bowlers bowled really well yesterday. Again, I don’t think the pitch was doing too much, but they made it really tough for us and toiled hard. So I thought they all bowled quite well. He, in particular, poses the biggest threat.”

When asked about whether he felt any empathy for Bumrah, considering the pacer’s hard work in a losing effort, Cummins’s reply was blunt: “Empathy? Not too much, no.”
As the series progresses, with Australia now leading 2-1, they head into the next match with a strong advantage. The final Test of the series will be held on January 3, 2025, at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where India will look to level the series and keep their hopes alive.
