Whilom Indian new ball bowlers, Irfan Pathan and Laxmipathy Balaji, had won matches for India on their respective days. One of India’s victory which came because of both of these bowlers’ combined efforts was during the fifth ODI of India’s tour of Pakistan in 2004 at Lahore.

Inzamam-ul-Haq, the then Pakistan captain, had won the toss and elected to field first. On the back of VVS Laxman’s sixth and last ODI century, India scored 293-3 in 50 overs. Coming in to bat at No. 3, Laxman scored 107 (104) with the help of 11 fours. Although the numbers weren’t something to boast about, but, Pathan and Balaji scored 30 runs in 18 balls between them in the death overs to provide India with a strong finish.

Pakistan were jostled with their top three in Yasir Hameed, Mohammad Yousuf and Taufeeq Umar back in the hut by the seventh over. Half-centuries from Shoaib Malik (65) and Moin Khan (72) weren’t enough for the Pakistanis to sneak past the winning line.

With bowling figures of 10-2-32-3, Pathan was the pick of the Indian bowlers. His new ball partner, Balaji, picked up figures of 9.2-0-62-3 to win the match for India.
