The Ireland cricket team are set for a fresh start in T20Is, with Paul Stirling stepping down as captain ahead of a high-profile series against the Indian cricket team in June 2026. The leadership change signals a transitional phase for Ireland as they look to rebuild after a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign.

The upcoming India series had been in discussion for months, with reports last year suggesting talks between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Cricket Ireland. The development is now official, with Ireland’s director of high performance, Graham West, confirming the tour while announcing Stirling’s decision.

“With qualification secured for the T20 World Cup in 2028, Paul’s decision provides an opportunity for a new captain to begin implementing their style, starting with the India series in June,” West stated.

Ireland’s move comes on the back of a tough T20 World Cup 2026, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage, managing just one win in four matches. Losses to Sri Lanka and Australia, along with a washed-out game against Zimbabwe, exposed gaps that the team will now aim to address under new leadership.

Despite stepping down from T20I captaincy, Stirling will continue to lead Ireland in ODIs, ensuring stability in the 50-over format. His decision reflects a strategic shift — one that allows him to focus more on his individual performance while supporting the team’s evolution.

“While I will be stepping away from T20 captaincy, I remain fully committed to Ireland cricket,” Paul Stirling said. “This decision allows me to focus on being the best version of myself and contributing more effectively on the field.”

Ireland are expected to announce a new T20I captain soon, with Lorcan Tucker and Harry Tector emerging as frontrunners for the role.

The India series is likely to fit into a packed international window following IPL 2026. India are scheduled to face Afghanistan in a Test and ODI series before heading into a white-ball tour of England in July. With a new captain at the helm and a major series lined up, Ireland’s T20 reset begins with a challenging but exciting test against one of the world’s top teams.
