In a thrilling start to their three-match T20I series against Pakistan, Ireland showcased their mettle, securing a remarkable five-wicket victory in the opening game at Castle Avenue in Dublin on Friday, May 10. The win provided a significant morale boost for the Irish team ahead of their anticipated clash with Pakistan in the upcoming T20 World Cup in June. Following the historic victory, Ireland captain Paul Stirling shed light on the strategic decisions influenced by Pakistan’s renowned flat pitches.
“We are absolutely delighted, we wanted to start the summer off well and it was almost a perfect day for us. When you come here, especially from Pakistan, the flattest pitches in the world, ask them to bat first and see what they can get. 170 was OK but we leaked a few, but we were happy to chase 180,” Paul Stirling expressed during the post-match presentation.

Opting to bat first after losing the toss, Pakistan posted a respectable total of 182/6 in their allotted 20 overs, with captain Babar Azam leading from the front with a composed 57 off 43 balls, supported by Saim Ayub’s brisk 45 off 29 balls. However, disciplined bowling from the Irish side, spearheaded by Craig Young (2/27) and Joseph Delany (1/11), restricted Pakistan’s scoring opportunities.
In response, Ireland faced an early setback at 27/2, but a magnificent innings of 77 runs off 55 deliveries from Andrew Balbirnie, combined with valuable contributions from Harry Tector (36 off 27), George Dockrell (24 off 12), and others, propelled the hosts to a historic victory with one over to spare.
Stirling commended Balbirnie’s pivotal knock and his adept management of the chase. He also highlighted Ireland’s strong performances against Pakistan at home, emphasizing the significance of clinching the win.

“With the first win under their belt, the hosts have an early 1-0 lead in the three-game series. The Babar Azam-led side will need to regroup quickly, with the second T20I taking place on Sunday at the same venue,” concluded Paul Stirling, looking ahead to the upcoming fixtures.
