The Punjab Kings (PBKS) are just one step away from scripting history as they prepare to face the Mumbai Indians (MI) in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, June 1. A major reason behind this remarkable turnaround for the franchise has been the calm leadership and consistent performances of their captain, Shreyas Iyer.

The 30-year-old, who already boasts a Champions Trophy title, has added a fresh spark to Punjab’s campaign with his composed presence in the middle order and sharp tactical acumen on the field. While Iyer’s contributions with the bat have been significant, what’s truly stood out this season is the unshakeable support he’s earned from his teammates.
In a heartwarming video shared by Star Sports, several young PBKS players opened up about Iyer’s leadership, highlighting how his trust and backing have allowed them to thrive. It’s been 11 long years since Punjab last featured in the IPL playoffs, and this resurgence is being credited as much to team spirit as to individual brilliance.

Leading wicket-taker Arshdeep Singh, who has played under Iyer in domestic cricket, praised his captain’s empowering approach. “He gives players the freedom to express themselves without pressure. He backs us completely and wants us to play selflessly for the team,” Arshdeep said.

Opening batter Prabhsimran Singh echoed similar sentiments. “Shreyas bhai always says if you have a positive thought, act on it. Don’t second guess. If you feel like hitting a ball, hit it. Otherwise, rotate strike. He bats like the world’s best – clean, confident, and composed under pressure.”
As PBKS gear up for their biggest test yet, a place in the final against Royal Challengers Bangalore, there’s a genuine sense of belief in the camp. Shreyas Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to an IPL title just last season, now has the opportunity to create a rare record.

If he guides PBKS to the title, he’ll become only the third captain to win consecutive IPL trophies – and uniquely, the first to do so with two different franchises. From being a solid batter to a visionary leader, Iyer’s journey in IPL 2025 has been nothing short of inspiring. Punjab fans will be hoping that their captain can deliver one final push toward a historic maiden IPL title.
