In a thrilling display of aggressive batting, English cricketer Phil Salt demonstrated his formidable prowess against the West Indies during the Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Salt’s remarkable performance was highlighted by his astonishing feat of scoring 30 runs in a single over off West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd, marking a significant moment in England’s first Super 8 match of the tournament.
The match took place at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia on Thursday, June 20. After winning the toss, England’s captain, Jos Buttler, elected to bowl first. The West Indies set a challenging target, accumulating 180 runs for the loss of four wickets over 20 overs. Despite the daunting total, England’s response was emphatic, as they achieved the target with 15 balls to spare and retained eight wickets in hand.
Chasing the 181-run target, England began on a strong note, courtesy of their openers Jos Buttler and Phil Salt, who collectively put up 58 runs during the power play. However, Buttler, after a promising start, was unable to convert his performance into a substantial score and was dismissed for 25 runs off 22 balls by Roston Chase in the 8th over, who provided a crucial breakthrough for the West Indies.

For his exceptional performance, Phil Salt was rightfully named Player of the Match. Reflecting on his innings, Salt acknowledged the challenges posed by spin during the middle overs but expressed confidence in his ability to capitalize against pace bowling, especially under favorable conditions like the wind and the short boundary on one side of the ground.
“I enjoy batting here, but I’m even more pleased to have played a part in a strong team win,” Phil Salt said. “It was tricky facing spin in the middle overs, but I was confident that pace would come into play eventually. With the wind at one end and a short boundary, I backed myself to take on Shepherd.”
