Amidst the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Mumbai Indians (MI) spinner Piyush Chawla addressed the controversial reception faced by skipper Hardik Pandya from fans. While acknowledging the lack of control over crowd behaviour, Chawla emphasized Pandya’s resilience amid the adverse atmosphere.
The IPL homecoming for Hardik Pandya, now leading Mumbai Indians, has been marred by unexpected jeers from the crowd. This unwelcome response stemmed from Pandya’s succession as captain from Rohit Sharma, a revered figure in the team’s history with five IPL titles under his leadership.
Notably, Pandya encountered booing from spectators at both the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The chants of “Rohit Rohit” further compounded his challenges, echoing throughout the matches despite Pandya’s attempts to remain unfazed.

Adding to the pressure, Pandya’s performance with bat and ball in the initial IPL fixtures failed to meet expectations, exacerbating scrutiny over his captaincy. Mumbai Indians suffered consecutive losses against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad, finding themselves at the bottom of the points table.
As Mumbai Indians brace for their upcoming encounter against Rajasthan Royals at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on April 1st, Chawla expressed hope for a turnaround in fan sentiment. Despite the adversity, he commended Pandya’s focus on his responsibilities, urging loyal supporters to rally behind the team.
In an interview with Sportstar, Piyush Chawla remarked on the challenges faced by Pandya, emphasizing the team’s inability to control crowd behaviour. He underscored Pandya’s resilience amidst the backlash, highlighting the importance of maintaining focus amidst external distractions.
“Spectator behavior is beyond our control,” PIyush Chawla stated, “but I am hoping that the loyal Mumbai Indians fans will come to Wankhede and support us.”
