Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday came with a striking sporting announcement and a personal touch. Modi presented former Australia captain Steve Waugh with an almost 20-year-old photograph from their first meeting, taken when Modi was serving as Gujarat chief minister, underscoring the long-standing connection between the two leaders and the cricketing ties between India and Australia.

At the MCG, Modi joined Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan for a landmark unveiling: the opening match of the 2026-27 Big Bash League will be played in Chennai on December 12. The fixture between the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will be the first official BBL match staged outside Australia, marking a major step in the league’s international ambitions.

The decision is being framed as part of the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap, a broader initiative aimed at deepening cooperation in sports development, youth engagement, infrastructure and athlete pathways.

The roadmap was unveiled at the MCG and has support from both governments, with the Centre for Australia-India Relations helping fund the project. Chennai was chosen with backing from the BCCI and Australian Consul-General Silai Zaki, with the city’s cricket culture and the popularity of Chennai Super Kings seen as major reasons for the selection.

For Cricket Australia, the Chennai opener is more than a symbolic gesture. The league already has a broadcast presence in India through JioStar, and executives believe taking the BBL into one of the world’s biggest cricket markets could dramatically expand its reach. Cricket Australia’s Big Bash boss Alistair Dobson has said the contest could become the most-watched match in the history of any Australian domestic sporting competition.

The match will be played at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium and is expected to anchor a week-long “G’Day Namaste” festival featuring cultural, business and sporting events. Australian broadcasters are expected to travel to Chennai, while JioStar will carry the match for Indian viewers. Cricket Australia is also targeting a sell-out crowd at the 38,000-capacity venue and plans to offer travel packages for Australian fans.

Modi also used the occasion to highlight the growing sporting bond between the two nations. He said sport has the power to bring people together and pointed to major upcoming events such as India’s 2030 Commonwealth Games and Australia’s Brisbane 2032 Olympics as opportunities for deeper collaboration. He also congratulated Australia on its Women’s Cricket World Cup triumph, reinforcing the sense that India and Australia are entering a defining decade in global sport.
