With 122 wickets in 125 matches at an average of 25.56 and a strike rate of 7.56, Kolkata Knight Riders’ leg-spin bowler Piyush Chawla is now the joint third-highest (with Dwayne Bravo) wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League. Chawla has been in the Indian domestic circuit for close to 12 years now.

Having such an experience in his portfolio makes him one of the premier spinners around the country. Seldom to we see him bowling in the powerplay. Gautam Gambhir, captain of KKR, has made him do that as well in this season. Chawla played in KKR’s first match against Gujarat Lions and was drafted in to share the new ball with Trent Boult.

Having conceded eight runs in the first over, Chawla dismissed Jason Roy on his first delivery of the second over. He may not have bowled the best of deliveries but for a modern-day bowler, a wicket is a wicket. Chawla was dropped in the following match against Mumbai Indians. In their third encounter today, KKR decided to bring back the experienced leg-spinner even at the risk of dropping the in-form Kuldeep Yadav.

Hashim Amla and Manan Vohra went all guns blazing against the new ball bowlers. The duo added 53-0 in five overs. Gambhir introduced Chawla into the attack to bowl the last over of the powerplay. Guess what? Chawla cleaned up Vohra on the first ball itself, giving some relief to his captain. Watch the video of how Chawla dismissed Vohra on his first ball:
