Former Indian spinner, Pragyan Ojha said that the veteran Indian opener, Shikhar Dhawan is completely in contention to play the 2023 World Cup at home. Dhawan led India’s ODI team in the West Indies in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma. Under his leadership, India whitewashed the Windies in the three-match series at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad.

Pragyan Ojha reckoned that India’s batting looked indifferent on the tour of England, but the batters have done well in the Caribbean. On Tuesday, India won the final ODI by more than 100 runs and they also registered the third-highest ODI run-chase in the West Indies in the second game.

During a recent chat with Glance, Pragyan Ojha said, “I am seeing the right signs. When you look at a senior player, you have to see how he is being used. He’s in the mix [for the 2023 ODI World Cup] and now, when the seniors are not there and he’s just playing one format, he is made captain of the second-string team.”

Ojha was of the opinion that Rohit wanted Dhawan in the team due to their healthy camaraderie. The veteran also stated that Dhawan has shown a great amount of fitness over the time period.

Elaborating the same, Pragyan Ojha said, “He’s the captain, the leader of the pack, and the batting which looked rusty in England is now looking better he’s trying to get into that space. It is clear that Rohit Sharma wants Shikhar because their partnership is very good.”

The spinner concluded, “Rohit has said this and he is sticking to it. I am confident that Shikhar will be in the mix unless there is some forced change. I think he’s in a pretty good space and he’s fit and that is the benchmark. You can’t just fool around with not being fit.”
