A Mumbai sessions court on Tuesday imposed a token cost of ₹100 on Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw for failing to file his response in an ongoing case filed by social media influencer Sapna Gill, who has accused him of molestation. Gill had approached the Dindoshi Sessions Court in April 2024 with a criminal revision petition, challenging an earlier magistrate’s order.

The magistrate’s court had denied her request to register an FIR against Shaw, directing police to conduct only a preliminary inquiry instead. Since then, the sessions court has repeatedly asked Shaw to file his reply, even warning during the previous hearing that he was being given a final opportunity.
On Tuesday, the court noted Prithvi Shaw had still not submitted a response. “Still, one more chance is granted for a cost of ₹100,” the judge remarked, adjourning the matter to December 16, 2025. Gill’s lawyer, Advocate Ali Kaashif Khan, accused Shaw of deliberately avoiding the judicial process, saying, “This has been his regular way of handling the case despite being summoned multiple times.”

The case stems from a February 15, 2023, altercation at a Mumbai pub in Andheri. According to police, Gill’s friend, Shobit Thakur, repeatedly requested selfies with Shaw around 1 a.m. Shaw initially agreed but later refused further requests, sparking an argument.

Thakur was asked to leave the venue, but the situation escalated as Shaw was leaving with friend Ashish Yadav. Thakur was reportedly attacked with a baseball bat, while Yadav was allegedly chased by a group of six, including Gill and Thakur, and threatened for ₹50,000. Gill was detained on February 17, 2023, and released on bail three days later.
Gill, however, has presented a contrasting narrative. She claims Shaw and Yadav invited her and Thakur for drinks and later assaulted Thakur after the selfie request. Gill has accused Shaw of molesting her and filed a counter-complaint alleging assault and outraging her modesty.

The magistrate’s refusal to file an FIR prompted Gill to escalate the case to the sessions court, which is now reviewing her plea. With Shaw’s reply still pending, the court imposed the nominal penalty and extended a final deadline for compliance. The next hearing in this high-profile case is set for December 16, 2025.
