Prithvi Shaw is the young batting sensation who became the headlines with a century in the debut Test match for India. But then, he has been away from the national team for quite some time now. While most would have given up or lost hope, Prithvi Shaw was not stopping at that. His never-ending quest for runs finally yielded fruit when he piled runs in domestic cricket with some great performances, and recently his bat was also on fire in England in a remarkable innings of 97 runs.
Making runs for Northamptonshire now in the ODI Cup in England, Prithvi Shaw has put on very consistent talismanic shows every day. A few days ago, he got another quick half-century, and now, he has followed it up with another top-class performance, getting out just four runs short of a century. His efforts were in vain as Northamptonshire succumbed to Durham by four wickets.
Northamptonshire batted first and posted 260 in 49.2 overs for the loss of all their wickets. It was Prithvi Shaw who was the masterblaster of all, top-scoring with 97 runs off 71 balls—16 fours and 1 six. He was batting very aggressively for the operability of this innings, but unfortunately, he got out on the first ball of the 23rd over, three runs short of a well-appreciated century.

After his dismissal, the Northamptonshire innings folded, with George Bartlett, who scored 34 runs, being the next best batsman in the innings. Prithvi Shaw’s previous innings of 76 runs against Middlesex certainly gave adequate signals that he is in good touch, while his recent performances are bound to bring his name into the reckoning of the selectors. Whether the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, will give Shaw the green light to make a comeback into Team India is far from reality at this moment.

In response, on the bowling front, Durham’s Paul Coughlin, Scott Borthwick, and Colin Ackermann took two wickets each, and Bas de Leede and George Drissell got one.
The chase revolved around the anchoring knock from Colin Ackermann, who put up a commanding 108 off 106 balls, hitting 14 fours and one six. Captain Alex Lees also had a hand in things with a good 55, together with four boundaries, as Scott Borthwick added excellent support at the death with 42.

Prithvi Shaw’s performances in England spoke of his resolve and class this series. With runs continuing to flow from his bat, he would be under the closest scrutiny of cricket aficionados and selectors alike to see if he can reclaim his place in the Indian team and set his international career once again ablaze.
