In the past year or so, Team India has witnessed multiple captains on multiple occasions. Along with too much chopping and changing in the playing XI, a lot of players have been seen leading the team which hasn’t gone very well with a lot of pundits. From KL Rahul to Hardik Pandya, several cricketers have captained the Indian team across formats, barring one veteran cricketer, R Ashwin.

Ever since India’s all-format skipper, Virat Kohli stepped down from the post, as many as seven players have led the team across the formats. Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Hardik Pandya, all have led India across formats on various occasions. However, surprisingly, R Ashwin has not been featured on the list. He has been extremely instrumental in India’s success on multiple occasions.

His all-around performance, combined with his outstanding skillset and strategy making has helped the Indian team emerge victorious from the toughest of situations. However, when the lanky 36-year-old was asked the captaincy question, he had a very clear say.

Describing the same during a recent chat with The New Indian Express, R Ashwin said, “Once I hang up my boots, I think I’ll have an answer for that. But until then my dreams will be open, I’ll be looking forward to opportunities.” He believes that not becoming the captain of India shouldn’t affect his sleep nor should hamper his game.

Upon Hardik’s captaincy, R Ashwin went on to say, “He is a very smart cricketer. The thing I like about him is he is very chill. Because he’s chill and relaxed, I think it will keep the team atmosphere pretty relaxed and players will perform well as a unit.”

For now, it seems that India might look to indulge in split captaincy, as Rohit Sharma aims to have more focus on the ODIs and Tests. Hardik for the time being is being groomed as a T20I captain.
