Exactly a year ago, Indian batsman Lokesh Rahul scored his maiden T20I hundred vs West Indies at Lauderhill, Florida. He became only the 3rd Indian cricketer after Suresh Raina & Rohit Sharma to score a century in all the three formats of the game. India won the Test series 2-0 and now it was time for an Indian home T20I series in the United States.
MS Dhoni, the then Indian T20 captain, won the toss and chose to field. West Indies scored a mammoth 245-6 in 20 overs on the back of Evin Lewis’ maiden T20I century, 100 (49). His innings was comprised of five fours and nine sixes. He nearly levelled Yuvraj Singh’s record of hitting six sixes in an over when he hit Stuart Binny for five sixes in a row. His opening partner, Johnson Charles, chipped in with 79 (33) with the help of six fours and seven sixes. The duo was involved in an opening partnership of 126 in 57 balls.
Chasing an almost impossible target, India lost Ajinkya Rahane (7) in the third over. Even Virat Kohli (16) walked the long walk back to the pavilion in the fifth over. Coming in to bat at No. 4, Rahul joined hands with Rohit Sharma and brought India back into the game. The duo was involved in an 89-run partnership as Rohit Sharma (62) was dismissed in the 12th over. With Dhoni at the other end, it appeared as if India would score the require 106 runs in the remaining eight overs.
Rahul had just completed his half-century in the previous over. He completed his century, the fastest by an Indian in T20Is, by scoring a six off Andre Russell in the 19th over. Having scored 100 runs in seven overs, India required a paltry eight runs in the ultimate over. As luck would have it, India lost the match by a run as Dhoni failed to score two runs off the last ball. Rahul ended up scoring 110* (51) with the help of 12 fours and five sixes.
