Indian spinners made a strong impact in the latest round of the County Championship, with Rahul Chahar, R Sai Kishore and Yuzvendra Chahal producing notable performances for their respective teams in England. Rahul Chahar was the standout performer, claiming six wickets for Surrey in their Division One clash against Essex in Chelmsford. Surrey were bowled out for 183 in their first innings, but Chahar kept his side in the contest with excellent figures of 22-4-80-6.

Essex eventually reached 279 in 85 overs, giving themselves a useful lead. Chahar accounted for Charlie Allison, Michael Pepper, Zaman Akhtar, Simon Harmer, Jamie Porter and Sam Cook to complete an impressive six-wicket haul. Chahar also received support from his Rajasthan teammate Mahipal Lomror, who dismissed former South Africa captain Dean Elgar during Essex’s innings.

In another County Championship match, Tamil Nadu spinner R Sai Kishore made headlines for Gloucestershire against Durham. The left-arm spinner dismissed former England captain Ben Stokes for 45 before also removing former South Africa international Colin Ackermann for 38.

Durham remained in control despite Sai Kishore’s efforts, reaching 331/8 before bad light ended play early at Chester-le-Street. Gloucestershire had earlier been dismissed for just 137. Yuzvendra Chahal also contributed with the ball for Northamptonshire in their encounter against Kent in Northampton. The experienced leg-spinner finished with figures of 2/58 from 19 overs after Kent posted 345 in their first innings. Chahal dismissed Ekansh Singh and Keith Dudgeon.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi is reportedly set to join the County Championship as part of the BCCI’s plans to give him valuable red-ball match practice. Nabi was included in India’s Test squad for the Sri Lanka series but is yet to make his international debut. A source told IANS that Nabi is highly likely to travel to England, with the Indian team management keen for him to gain experience bowling with the red Kookaburra ball.

“Auqib is highly likely to be sent to England to play in the county championship.”The stint is expected to help Nabi prepare for India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand, where the conditions will differ from England but the experience of sustained red-ball cricket could prove valuable.

The source added that Nabi’s UK visa application has already been submitted and he is expected to travel once approval is received.“Though conditions right now in England are different from what it will be in New Zealand, it’s still a good place for Auqib to get quality practice time.”

With several Indian spinners already making an impact in county cricket, Nabi could become the latest Indian player to use the competition as preparation for international red-ball cricket.
