Recently, Rajasthan Royals’ new head coach Rahul Dravid and director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara met at the franchise’s office for a lighthearted chat. They reminisced about some of the funniest stump-mic moments from their playing days. The meeting, marked by laughter and nostalgia, showcased how much cricket—and the art of sledging—has changed over the years.

During their chat, they were asked if stump mics had become more advanced or the fact is that wicketkeepers were sledging more often. Dravid, being quick with a witty retort, pointed at Sangakkara and said that there is much that today’s players can learn from the Sri Lankan great.

“All these guys need to learn a few things from him,” quipped Rahul Dravid in a clip shared by Rajasthan Royals on social media. Sangakkara, known for mischievous yet classy behavior, cheekily retorted, “I never said a word.” Smiling, Dravid added, “Stump mics have become louder and better, I think.”

But then the conversation took a hilarious turn when Sangakkara recalled the incident of either Moin Khan or Rashid Latif who had been caught sledging in perfect English. However, when summoned by the match referee, the player feigned innocence, proclaiming that, “I am sorry, I don’t speak English.” And the duo was in fits as they laughed out over the quick thinking that had saved the day from the possible reprimand that might have followed.

Sangakkara also reminisced about how the wicket-keepers of the past would cunningly avoid being caught by covering stump mics with their boots. However, that is impossible today due to the modern technology and heightened sensitivity of microphones. Even though their talk was a reminiscence, Dravid and Sangakkara are now focusing on building the future for Rajasthan Royals.

Rahul Dravid was confirmed as the team’s head coach on 6 September 2024 when he inked a multi-year deal with the franchise after he helped India win the T20 World Cup in June last year. The IPL becomes a return for Dravid after a gap of five years, working at the National Cricket Academy before becoming India’s head coach. He will now join the Royals’ camp and prepare closely with captain Sanju Samson as well as the team management.

Sangakkara has been an integral part of Rajasthan Royals since 2021 and has played a vital role in the franchise’s finish in IPL 2022 as runners-up. The team, under his leadership, has secured two successive playoff berths, finishing third in the 2024 season. He will continue as the franchise’s director of cricket, ensuring strategic stability.

Recently, the two legends were spotted enjoying a casual batting session in Jaipur. Though they never played together professionally, watching them in action side by side was a treat for cricket fans, bringing a nostalgic charm to Rajasthan Royals’ preparations for the upcoming season.
