India’s head coach, Raul Dravid, has heaped praise on opener Shubman Gill, emphasizing his status as a star player. With the World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia approaching, Dravid expressed his excitement for the match and highlighted the significance of playing Test cricket in England. He commended Gill’s growth in international cricket, acknowledging his talent and recent performances.
As per the quotes in India Today, Rahul Dravid said ,“Really exciting for all the players to be playing this game again. There’s a lot of work that leads to this match. You play two years and a lot of Test series and results need to go your way. The opportunity to get to play this game is certainly well-deserved. Test cricket in England is always special and has great significance.”

Regarding Shubman Gill, Dravid showered him with praise, stating that he has always been a star player. He recalled Gill’s emergence from his Under-19 days, where he showcased his exceptional skills and was earmarked as a future special player. Dravid acknowledged Gill’s journey, which involved some periods in and out of the team, but highlighted his current progress and adjustment to international cricket.
“Shubman has always been a star player. He has been a class player when I saw him from his Under-19 days. He came into the U-19 World Cup and was already earmarked as someone who would become a very special player. He has been great, he’s had a few years with the team, he’s been in and out of the side a little bit, and he’s finding his feet in international cricket,” Rahul Dravid explained.

Dravid noted that everything is falling into place for Gill, highlighting his growing confidence and belief in succeeding at the international level. Gill’s recent performance in the IPL 2023, where he topped the run-scoring charts with 890 runs in 17 matches for the Gujarat Titans, further demonstrates his development and potential. Despite facing injuries along the way, Gill’s experience has grown, making him more comfortable in the international arena.
“It’s all come together. He’s had a few injuries as well. But it felt like over the last two years, it’s all come together. He’s now experienced at this level, he’s more comfortable around this space. He’s got that confidence and belief that he can succeed at this level. He has really developed as a superb player,” said Rahul Dravid.
