With the three-match ODI series against South Africa looming, Team India has announced a surprising change in its coaching staff. Head coach Rahul Dravid and his team will prioritize preparations for the Test series, leaving the ODI squad to the guidance of coaches from the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

This move marks a departure from usual practice, as VVS Laxman has often stepped in for Dravid during his absence. However, this time, Dravid and his team will be focused on a crucial three-day inter-squad match in Pretoria, running from December 20 to 22, to fine-tune their strategies before the Test series begins.

The NCA staff, led by batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, will be responsible for guiding the ODI team. Ajay Ratra will take charge of fielding duties, while the NCA’s Rajib Dutta will serve as bowling coach for the series.

Dravid’s decision to prioritize the Test series underscores India’s desire to get off to a strong start in the World Test Championship. Their first Test against South Africa commences on December 26 at SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium in Centurion.

Having drawn the T20I series against South Africa, India is eager to translate that momentum into positive results in the upcoming ODI and Test matches. After a rain-affected first T20I and a disappointing loss in the second, the Men in Blue bounced back with a commanding victory in the third, led by Suryakumar Yadav’s blistering century.

This revamped coaching setup presents a unique opportunity for the NCA staff to showcase their expertise and for younger players to gain valuable experience. While KL Rahul will lead the team in the ODIs, Rohit Sharma will take over the reins for the Test series. Regardless of who wears the armband, the entire team will be aiming to build on their T20I success and establish themselves as formidable contenders in both formats.
