Indian Opener KL Rahul equaled the world record of most 50+ scores in consecutive innings in Test matches. He achieved the feat in the first session of the third and final Test of India vs Sri Lanka at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy.
It was his ninth Test fifty and seventh in consecutive innings. He now equals Everton Weekes (West Indies), Andy Flower (Zimbabwe), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (West Indies), Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) and Chris Rogers (Australia) record of most fifty plus scores in successive innings.
Indian Opener K L Rahul has been in great form after being back from his shoulder injury and missing the Champions Trophy.
Rahul’s string of 50+ scores started from the second Test match against Australia at Bengaluru in March this year. He scored 90 and 51 in first and second innings respectively. After that, he scored 67, 60, 51*, 57. Interestingly, Rahul’s last century came against England last year when he scored 199 at Chennai. Missing his double-century by just a single run.
With today’s 50 he has gone past Gundappa Viswanath and Rahul Dravid’s record of most consecutive fifty plus record for India. K L Rahul averages almost 48 and has scored over 1300 runs in his 19 Tests.
India will play five ODI matches after this Test against Srilanka. The ODI team is yet not confirmed by the officials!
