In a significant shift that could reshape Indian cricket administration, Rajeev Shukla is poised to step in as the interim president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). While an official announcement is yet to be made, India Today reports that Shukla, currently the BCCI vice-president, is expected to take charge following the upcoming retirement of current president Roger Binny.

Binny, who turns 70 on July 19, 2025, will no longer be eligible to hold office under the BCCI’s constitution, which aligns with the National Sports Code. As per these regulations, any office-bearer must relinquish their position upon reaching the age of 70. Binny, who took over the presidency in October 2022, succeeded Sourav Ganguly and was the sole nominee at the time.

Despite his brief tenure, Binny leaves behind a legacy of tangible achievements. Under his leadership, India clinched the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, both landmark victories that rejuvenated Indian cricket fans. The team also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, narrowly losing to Australia.

One of Binny’s lasting contributions has been his support for women’s cricket. He was instrumental in launching the Women’s Premier League (WPL), an ambitious initiative that has significantly raised the profile of the women’s game in India. He also emphasised strengthening domestic cricket, advocating improved pay structures and encouraging senior players to participate more actively in local competitions.

A 1983 World Cup winner, Binny was India’s highest wicket-taker in that tournament, and later served Indian cricket in multiple capacities — from selector to coach, and administrator to mentor.

With Shukla stepping in as interim president, the BCCI will function under his guidance until the Annual General Meeting in September. At that time, he will also be eligible to contest for a full term as president. A seasoned cricket administrator and politician, Shukla brings years of experience, having served as IPL chairman and held key roles within the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association.

A BCCI insider confirmed, “As per convention, the senior-most office-bearer takes charge in such a scenario. Rajeev Shukla will serve as interim president until fresh elections are conducted at the AGM.”
