Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket has sparked a wave of emotional reactions, but perhaps none more heartfelt than that of his childhood coach, Rajkumar Sharma. Having watched Kohli grow from a determined teenager into one of India’s greatest-ever batters, Sharma believes the timing and manner of Kohli’s retirement send a powerful message.

Speaking to Sports Tak, Rajkumar Sharma highlighted how rare it is in Indian cricket for a senior player to step aside voluntarily when still in form and backed by millions.

“This retirement will be remembered for a very long time because when the whole country wants you to play and you choose to walk away — that takes character,” he said. “In India, we often see senior players being sidelined, not voluntarily stepping away. But Virat has set a unique example.”

Sharma further emphasized Kohli’s unwavering passion for Indian cricket and praised his bold choice, saying, “Whatever his reasons, I truly respect and admire his decision. He’s always given his everything for India, and this is yet another moment that reflects his integrity and grace.”
Kohli’s red-ball career is nothing short of extraordinary. Since his debut against the West Indies in 2011, he has amassed 9,230 runs in 123 Tests at an average of 46.85. His record includes 30 centuries and 31 fifties, and he stands tall among the game’s greats.

As a captain, Kohli transformed India’s Test side into a fearless and dominant unit. With 40 wins in 68 matches, he is India’s most successful Test captain. His legacy includes historic overseas victories — most notably the 2018-19 series win in Australia and the iconic win at Lord’s in 2021. At home, India lost just two Tests in seven years under his watch, maintaining a remarkable streak in red-ball dominance.
