Day 2 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai saw a staggering 17 wickets fall, making it a record-breaking day for both teams. India, after choosing not to enforce the follow-on, secured a commanding overall lead of 308 runs with seven wickets still in hand, putting them in the driver’s seat in this two-match series.

The fall of 17 wickets in a single day set a new record at Chepauk, surpassing the previous mark of 15, which occurred on Day 3 of a Test against the West Indies, as well as on Day 2 and 4 of India’s 2021 series against England.

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal, in a conversation with former India coach Ravi Shastri on JioCinema, sought Shastri’s opinion on the pitch rating under the new system. Shastri, known for his straightforward assessments, praised the surface, calling it “a good cricket pitch” that offered something for every type of bowler.

Tamim echoed this sentiment, noting that it provided ample opportunities for both spin and pace. India had earlier posted a challenging total of 376 runs, recovering from a shaky 34-3, thanks to a game-changing 199-run partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin (113) and Ravindra Jadeja (86).

Bangladesh’s reply faltered as Jasprit Bumrah ripped through their batting lineup, reducing them to a meager 149 all out, leaving India with a commanding first-innings lead of 227.

At stumps on Day 2, India stood at 81-3, with Shubman Gill unbeaten on 33 and Rishabh Pant steady at 12. With a lead already exceeding 300, India aims to further extend their advantage as they seek to maintain their dominance in the World Test Championship. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will need a monumental effort to turn the tide, as they have never beaten India in a Test match.
