The former head coach of India, Ravi Shastri, came forward to heaping lavish praises on Rohit Sharma, calling him one of the greatest captains in the game, right behind MS Dhoni. Shastri’s comments have come at a time when Sharma has made a brilliant record of leadership, which includes winning the T20 World Cup 2024 for India. Under his captaincy, India went on to play finals of the WTC and ODI World Cup in 2023.

Apart from these, Rohit Sharma has captured five IPL titles as the captain of the Mumbai Indians, which also makes him one of the decorated leaders in the game. Going forward, he feels Sharma is going to be very important for India in Champions Trophy 2025 and throughout this cycle of WTC.

More than anything else, Ravi Shastri praised the tactical acumen of Sharma. He went on to add that his aggressive approach to white-ball cricket has fetched big results for the Indian team.

The strategies especially for the T20 World Cup 2024 were obviously the high point, and how he carried out high-pressure scenarios like the final against South Africa in the closing five overs defending a difficult target of 30 runs. Shastri regards Sharma’s tactical skills as good as Dhoni’s—tall praise, really, since Dhoni is attributed as an extremely successful captain.

“As a tactician, let’s not forget that he’s been outstanding. He’ll go down as one of the best captains ever alongside Dhoni. If you ask me who’s better, I’d say both are on par when it comes to tactics in the white-ball game. I can’t pay a bigger compliment to Rohit than that because you know what MS has done and the titles he has won,” Ravi Shastri said during the ICC Review.

He also pointed out some of the strategic decisions that Sharma had made during the recent T20 World Cup. This included the timely return of Jasprit Bumrah, to the effective use made of both Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel at important times in the competition. “Rohit is not far behind and I thought tactically he was just outstanding in this year’s T20 World Cup.”. It is just the calmness, ability to get a Bumrah or a Pandya or even an Axar Patel at just the right time when needed, was great to see,” Shastri added.
