Gujarat Titans may already have one foot — and four toes — in the IPL 2026 playoffs, but their qualification is still not mathematically sealed. However, during the toss ahead of GT’s clash against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Saturday, former India head coach Ravi Shastri briefly jumped the gun with a light-hearted on-air error.

As Shubman Gill continued his remarkable run with the toss this season, Shastri mistakenly suggested that Gujarat had already confirmed their playoff spot. While hosting the toss presentation, the veteran commentator said, “You’ve got the Q alphabet already stamped against your team, how are you approaching this one?”

The moment quickly caught fans’ attention on social media, especially considering GT still needed one more win to officially secure qualification. It was a harmless slip from Shastri, who has previously had a few memorable commentary mix-ups, including an error during India’s T20 World Cup final win over New Zealand earlier this year.

To Gill’s credit, the Gujarat Titans skipper handled the situation smoothly without correcting Shastri on air. Instead, the Indian captain shifted the focus towards GT’s bigger objective — finishing inside the top two.

“It’s about how the momentum is with us and we have to consistently keep doing the things that we have been doing well,” Shubman Gill said at the toss. “This is not the stage or the time to take any team lightly, but we’re hoping to win the next two and be stable in the top two positions,” he added.

Gill’s response reflected the calm mindset that has defined Gujarat’s campaign this season. With a settled playing XI, strong bowling attack, and dependable top order, GT have emerged as one of the most balanced sides in IPL 2026.

After winning the toss, Gill opted to bowl first at Eden Gardens, backing Gujarat’s outstanding chasing record this season. Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders entered the contest under immense pressure in a virtual must-win clash to keep their playoff hopes alive. Despite the minor toss-time confusion, the spotlight remained firmly on Gujarat Titans’ consistency and Shubman Gill’s composed leadership as the tournament heads into its decisive phase.
