The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai marked its 50th anniversary on Sunday, January 18, with a grand celebration that brought together cricketing legends and fans alike. Among the standout moments of the evening was Ravi Shastri reminiscing about his historic achievement of hitting six consecutive sixes in an over, a feat that cemented his place in cricketing folklore. True to his flair, Shastri recreated the iconic moment in his signature commentary style, much to the delight of the audience.

The unforgettable event dates back to January 10, 1985, during a Ranji Trophy clash between Mumbai and Baroda at the very same venue. Shastri’s assault came at the expense of Baroda bowler Tilak Raj, etching his name in history as the first Indian cricketer to accomplish this rare feat.

Not only did his whirlwind innings include the six sixes, but it was also part of a double century that proved instrumental in Mumbai securing their 30th Ranji Trophy title that season, even though the match ended in a draw. As he recalled the moment, Shastri brought it to life as if it were unfolding live, narrating each stroke with vivid detail.

“When I hit six sixes, there was no TV or commentary,” Ravi Shastri remarked, replaying the scene with his typical enthusiasm. “The first one went over square leg, the second over mid-wicket. By the time the fifth sailed over the Gavaskar Stand, the party had started in Mumbai. Raj, the bowler, bowled a full toss, and I flat-batted it like a scud missile over long-off. It was a moment to remember.” His lively recounting left the audience in splits while reliving the historic milestone.

Shastri was the second cricketer in the world to achieve this feat, following Garry Sobers. Yuvraj Singh later matched the record in the 2007 T20 World Cup while Shastri was in the commentary box. Recently, Ruturaj Gaikwad joined the club with an extraordinary seven sixes in a single over in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match.
