Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has praised KL Rahul’s resurgence in the ongoing England Test series, saying that while everyone acknowledged his talent, what frustrated fans was his inability to deliver consistently. Shastri emphasised that Rahul, now with 375 runs from just three Tests—including two centuries and a fifty—is finally showcasing his full potential.

“He’s at his prime. He has got to make these next three, four years count,” added Ravi Shastri on the ICC Review, predicting a productive future. With Rahul already boasting the joint second-highest number of Test tons by an Indian in England, Shastri believes the next phase of his career could see him average close to 50.

What’s driven this transformation, according to Shastri, is Rahul’s subtle technical adjustment in England. By slightly opening his front foot during his stance and defence, he has allowed his back to transfer power smoothly, all while keeping the bat face straight. Crucially, this prevents the old errors: coming across the line or closing the bat, which used to see him trapped LBW or bowled.

Shastri’s analysis highlights how a minor adjustment can yield substantial benefits. Rahul’s ability to handle movement with a firm technique—locked in at a time when top-order stability is critical—showcases his evolved game.

KL Rahul’s career history has been a tale of extremes: domineering performances abroad, but inconsistency in recent years. Now at 33, he appears to be delivering the consistency previously expected, with Shastri affirming that his prime could be headed for a very prolific spell.

As India prepares for the fourth Test at Old Trafford starting July 23, all eyes will be on whether Rahul can maintain this high standard. With the series delicately poised, Shastri—and the cricketing fraternity—will hope this technical rebirth turns into a sustained run of big scores for India.
