Uncertainty surrounds Rohit Sharma’s participation in the Sydney Test and possibly his Test career, as former India coach Ravi Shastri speculated about the captain’s future. Reports of unrest in the dressing room have added fuel to the fire. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, speaking at a press conference in Sydney, refrained from confirming Rohit’s place in the playing XI for the final match.

Meanwhile, several media outlets have suggested that Jasprit Bumrah is poised to return as captain, with Rohit likely to be dropped. Ravi Shastri, sharing his thoughts with the ICC, hinted that Rohit might consider retiring from Test cricket if his struggles persist. The Indian captain’s form has been dismal, managing just 31 runs across five innings in the ongoing series, averaging a mere 6.2.

“He’ll make the decision, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he chooses to retire. He’s not getting younger,” Ravi Shastri remarked. “Young talent like Shubman Gill, who averages over 40 in 2024, has been sitting out. It makes you question the strategy. So, it’s Rohit’s call, but the timing might be right.”

Shastri added that if India still had a chance to qualify for the World Test Championship Final, the equation might change. “If they qualify, it’s a different story. Otherwise, this could be an opportune moment for him to bow out on a high note.”
