The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has witnessed varied opinions regarding the Impact Player rule, drawing both criticism and support from players and coaches. Amidst the discourse, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has emerged as a staunch advocate for the rule, emphasizing its positive impact on the game’s evolution.
Implemented first in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament and subsequently in IPL 2023, the Impact Player rule has sparked debates within the cricketing community. Notably, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma expressed concerns about its potential limitations on all-rounders’ development.
Joining the chorus of discontent were cricketers like Axar Patel, Mukesh Kumar, and Mitchell Starc, who voiced their reservations. However, Shastri offered a contrasting viewpoint, urging stakeholders to embrace change and adapt to modern cricketing trends.

In a candid conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin on YouTube, Shastri defended the rule’s efficacy, citing the intensified competition and thrilling finishes witnessed in the previous IPL season. However, Ravi Shastri, on Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel, urged fans and players to embrace change: “The Impact Player [rule] is good,” Shastri said. “You have to evolve with the times… It’s got tighter finishes [last year]. You saw the number of close results we had.”
Acknowledging the initial scepticism surrounding new regulations, Shastri emphasized the importance of observing its impact over time. He highlighted the significant role played by individual performances in shaping match outcomes under the new rule, suggesting a potential shift in perspectives over time.
