Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is already ready for international cricket and has urged selectors to fast-track the youngster into India’s senior T20 side after his sensational performances in IPL 2026. The 15-year-old left-handed opener has enjoyed a dream rise over the past year.

After starring in India’s triumphant ICC Men’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup campaign earlier this season, Sooryavanshi has carried that momentum straight into the Indian Premier League with Rajasthan Royals. His fearless strokeplay and aggressive intent have quickly made him one of the biggest talking points of the tournament.

Sooryavanshi has already smashed 440 runs in 11 innings at a staggering strike rate of 236.56, including a breathtaking 36-ball century against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The youngster has also registered two fifties and currently leads the IPL 2026 six-hitting charts with 40 maximums, underlining his extraordinary power-hitting ability at such a young age.

Impressed by the teenager’s maturity and confidence, Ravi Shastri believes India should not delay his introduction to international cricket. “The door would be three-fourths open,” Shastri said during the latest episode of The ICC Review. “If you want to bring young players into the setup quickly, T20 cricket is the ideal format. This guy can walk into many international sides right now.”

Ravi Shastri also dismissed concerns surrounding the batter’s age, insisting that talent and temperament matter more than numbers.

“A lot of people will ask whether he is 15, 16 or even younger. I don’t care. Look at the way he is batting and taking on bowlers twice his age without fear. That confidence is special,” he added.

The former India coach further suggested that India’s upcoming tour of Ireland could provide the perfect opportunity for Sooryavanshi to make his senior debut. The youngster’s rapid rise has already continued off the field as well, with the batter recently earning his maiden India A call-up for the upcoming tri-series in Sri Lanka involving Afghanistan.
