Former India head coach Ravi Shastri offered crucial advice to KL Rahul during the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chennai. Shastri, a seasoned figure in Indian cricket, urged Rahul to unlock his full potential, emphasizing that this realization could lead to a transformation in the batter’s career. His words came during a commentary session on Day 3 when he encouraged Rahul to adopt a more confident and assertive mindset.

“KL Rahul needs to realize that he has so much talent,” Ravi Shastri remarked. “The day he comes out with that mindset and thinking, he will be a different player.”

Rahul, who was dismissed for 16 runs off 52 balls in the first innings by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, had a slightly better outing in the second innings. Remaining unbeaten on 22 off 19 balls, he contributed to India’s total of 287-4 before the team declared. During this innings, he also crossed the milestone of 8,000 international runs, becoming the 17th Indian cricketer to achieve such a feat.

Despite this achievement, his inconsistency remains a talking point. Since his debut in 2014, Rahul has been viewed as a player with immense promise. However, injuries and patches of poor form have disrupted his trajectory.

Initially, Rahul was groomed as an opener, but his adaptability has seen him transition to a middle-order role in both Test and ODI formats. His versatility even led to him being deployed as a wicketkeeper-batter during the Asia Cup and the World Cup in the absence of Rishabh Pant, where he excelled. Despite the highs and lows of his career, Rahul has managed to stay relevant in the Indian team setup.

His splendid 87 in the Test series against England earlier this year highlighted his ability, but an injury ruled him out of the remainder of the series. Rahul’s international journey has been marked by promise, resilience, and moments of brilliance, yet he is still striving to reach the peak of his potential. With India’s upcoming Test season, Rahul will be aiming to cement his place as a pivotal figure in the team and live up to the faith that the management and fans have in him.
