Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return to India’s T20I squad has sparked plenty of discussion, with Ravichandran Ashwin backing the experienced pacer after his recall for the five-match series against New Zealand, starting October 24. Bhuvneshwar has been away from international cricket for nearly four years, having last represented India in a T20I against New Zealand in November 2022.

His return comes after an impressive IPL 2026 campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he picked up 28 wickets and played a key role in their successful title defence. Speaking on his show Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin discussed what Bhuvneshwar’s selection could mean for other experienced players hoping to return to the Indian team. He also pointed towards a possible change in India’s selection approach following Ajit Agarkar’s departure as chairman of selectors.

“The chairman of selectors is set to be changed. Ajit Agarkar is no longer a part of the setup. Maybe Ajit focused more on youngsters and newcomers. But now you see, without Bumrah, India’s bowling attack can be a little susceptible,” Ravichandran Ashwin said.

The former India spinner believes the selectors could now be placing greater importance on experience, particularly with Jasprit Bumrah rested for the New Zealand T20Is.

“The BCCI is now leaning towards experience. The fact that they have picked Bhuvneshwar (Kumar), I wouldn’t say that the door is shut on (Mohammed) Shami either. But I am extremely happy that Bhuvneshwar has broken down the door for his selection,” Ravichandran Ashwin added.

Bhuvneshwar’s T20I record further highlights his experience. He has played 87 matches for India, taking 90 wickets at an average of 23.10 and an economy rate of 6.96. He is part of a 16-member squad led by Shreyas Iyer.

Meanwhile, Ravichandran Ashwin’s comments have also brought Mohammed Shami’s international future back into focus. The veteran pacer has not featured for India since the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March 2025.

Shami has battled injuries since then and has yet to secure a consistent return despite performances in domestic cricket and the IPL. He has represented India in 64 Tests, 108 ODIs and 25 T20Is, claiming 229, 206 and 27 wickets respectively. With Bhuvneshwar now back in the fold, Ashwin believes the door could remain open for Shami as well if he can continue proving his fitness and form.
