Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his thoughts on the viral videos of Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir laughing together during the recently concluded ODI series against England, urging fans not to read too much into the public interactions. According to Ashwin, professional athletes are well aware that cameras are constantly following them, and their on-field or dressing-room behaviour does not always reflect what is happening behind the scenes.

Speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir’s relationship has been a major talking point since last year. Reports have repeatedly claimed that differences between the former India captain and the head coach stem from a power struggle within the team management. Following Rohit’s retirement from Test cricket and his decision to step away from ODI captaincy, questions have also been raised about his long-term place in India’s white-ball plans.

Despite the rumours, Rohit and Gambhir were spotted sharing light-hearted moments on the Lord’s balcony and during the third ODI against England. Their friendly interactions led many fans to believe that any differences between the two had been resolved. However, Ashwin believes professional relationships are far more complex than they appear in public.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the veteran spinner explained that experienced professionals rarely display disagreements in front of cameras.

“Everyone is a professional. Everyone knows there’s a camera in front of them. You don’t fight like children in front of the camera. In a professional setup, they won’t even fight. If we feel something isn’t right, we’ll simply talk less. It’s better to avoid confrontations. If you can perform, who can stop you? Virat performed, Rohit performed—job done. Now, who can say anything?” Ravichandran Ashwin said.

Ashwin’s remarks also come amid continued speculation over Gambhir’s relationship with Virat Kohli. Although the two have also been seen sharing friendly moments in public, reports have frequently suggested that their relationship has had its share of differences over the years.

For now, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have answered many of their critics with performances on the field. Kohli has enjoyed an impressive run of form throughout 2026, while Rohit’s magnificent 138 at Lord’s has strengthened his case to remain part of India’s ODI plans. However, with the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, the experienced duo will need to continue delivering consistently to secure their places in the squad.
