In a show of solidarity, Rajasthan Royals’ spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has stepped forward to back Mumbai Indians’ current skipper, Hardik Pandya, amidst the storm of fan criticism during the ongoing IPL 2024 season. Following Pandya’s transfer from the Gujarat Titans to the Mumbai Indians and subsequent appointment as captain, a wave of discontent has emerged among certain segments of fans, questioning the decision and expressing their discontent through booing and online backlash.

Mark Boucher, the head coach of the Mumbai Indians, clarified that the decision to hand over the captaincy reins to Pandya aimed to provide Rohit Sharma with more batting freedom, given recent struggles. However, this move has been perceived by some fans as a betrayal of Rohit Sharma, stirring up controversy and fueling fan conflicts.

Amidst the tumult, Ravichandran Ashwin took to his YouTube channel to address the issue, urging an end to fan conflicts and emphasizing that neither the franchise nor the player bears responsibility for such disputes. “Neither the franchise nor the player has a role to play in this at all. I think the responsibility and the onus lie on the fans,” remarked Ravichandran Ashwin, highlighting the absence of similar conflicts in other cricketing nations.

Pandya’s tenure as Mumbai Indians’ captain has faced early challenges, with the team suffering defeats in their first two matches of the season against the Gujarat Titans and the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite personal batting struggles, Pandya remains determined to lead his team to victory and is focused on turning their fortunes around in the upcoming matches.
