India’s premier off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had a stint with Surrey during a match against Somerset in the County Championship 2021 at Kennington Oval, London. The 34-year-old all-rounder showcased his mettle with the ball during the second innings against Somerset. In the first innings, he only managed to take 1 wicket in the first innings as he conceded 96 runs in his quota of 42 overs where he bowled 9 maidens.

Somerset managed to post a formidable total of 429 at the expense of 10 wickets. Captain James Hildreth was the highest run-getter with a score of 107 including 13 boundaries. Jordan Clark and Amar Virdi took 3 wickets apiece while Daniel Moriarty took a couple of wickets to his name. On the other hand, Surrey was bowled out for 240. Surrey skipper Rory Burns scored 50 at the top of the order.

The opening batsman thumped 6 fours and a six. His partner Mark Stoneman scored 67 with the help of 12 boundaries. After both the players got out, there was no stability from Surrey batsmen. Eventually, they were bowled out for a low-scoring total. Although Ashwin failed to take many wickets with the ball in the first innings, he weaved the magic in the second innings. Meanwhile, Van der Merwe took 4 wickets to his name.

Ravichandran Ashwin mounted pressure on Somerset in the second innings. Ashwin’s spectacular performance is indeed good news to Team India. Virat Kohli & his men will be locking horns with Joe Root-led team in the five-match Test series. The first Test is scheduled to begin on August 4 at Trent Bridge. Ashwin is playing at the venue where England will host the fourth Test.

Ashwin ripped through the defense of Somerset’s batting line-up. As a result, they eventually got bundled out for just a paltry total of 69. Surrey lost 3 wickets in the run-chase as Hashim Amla and Jamie Smith are batting on 23 and 25. Surrey scored 79/3 in 24 overs (Day 4, second session). They still need 180 runs to win the game.
