Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shocked the cricket world with his sudden announcement of retirement from international cricket following the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Brisbane. The decision marked the end of a distinguished 14-year career in which Ashwin became one of India’s greatest match-winners.

With 537 wickets in 106 Tests, Ashwin is India’s second-highest wicket-taker, trailing only Anil Kumble. His contributions with the bat were just as significant, amassing 3503 runs and six centuries, solidifying his role as a key all-rounder. Ashwin’s retirement announcement, made during the post-match press conference, came as a surprise to many, especially after his limited role in the ongoing series.

The timing also coincided with India’s upcoming tour of England, which left many speculating about his decision. However, it was his longtime teammate and close friend, Virat Kohli, who responded with an emotional message on social media.

“I’ve played with you for 14 years, and when you told me today you’re retiring, it made me a bit emotional. Flashbacks of all those years playing together came to me. I’ve enjoyed every bit of the journey with you, Ash. Your skill and match-winning contributions to Indian cricket are second to none, and you will always be remembered as a legend of Indian cricket,” Kohli wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

He added, “Wish you nothing but the best in your life with your family and everything else that unfolds for you. With massive respect and lots of love, thanks for everything buddy”.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s reply to Kohli was equally heartfelt. “Thanks, buddy! Like I told you, I will be walking out with you to bat at the MCG,” he said, highlighting the deep bond they shared. This connection was further evident on the final rain-affected day of the Brisbane Test, where Kohli was seen comforting Ashwin in the dressing room, wrapping his arm around his shoulder and giving him a hug.
