Former India and Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Anil Kumble has shared that they did not get it right in the IPL 2024 auction held in Dubai on Tuesday, December 19 as well. However, RCB finished sixth in the IPL2023 points table, winning seven and losing seven matches as well. They are one of only three original teams to have never won the title yet, along with Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings.

Speaking to Jio Cinema, Kumble said that RCB’s performance rating in the IPL 2024 auction isn’t good since they could not replace the players they released as well. RCB released 11 players, namely Wanindu Hasaranga, Josh Hazlewood, Harshal Patel, Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, David Willey, Wayne Parnell, Sonu Yadav, Avinash Singh, Siddharth Kaul, Kedar Jadhav ahead of the auction.

“I think I agree with this in terms of the rating, I don’t think they go beyond seven, because when you look at an auction, you’re looking to better what you have done in the past or released. The three bowlers they released, if you look at Hasaranga, Hazlewood and Harshal Patel. Have you picked players better than them?,” said Anil Kumble.

He further said that RCB did not get their strategy right in the auction, saying that they’re still short of a spinner. RCB bought six players at the auction – Yash Dayal (Rs 5 crore), Alzarri Joseph (Rs 11.50 crore), Tom Curran (Rs 1.50 crore), Lockie Ferguson (Rs 2 crore), Swapnil Singh (Rs 20 lakh), and Saurav Chauhan (Rs 20 lakh).

“They still require a spinner. They don’t have a spinner. Even at the M Chinnaswamy stadium, it’s the wicket-taking spinners who always perform better. So they don’t have that. They’ll have to lean back on Karn Sharma, who hardly played last season. He was the impact bowler for them, but didn’t play all the matches. So it’s a huge ask and then they’ve made a trade as well. So it’s not easy without a spinner. I don’t think they got it quite right,” Anil Kumble concluded.
