RCB fans’ elation ended up in a stampede

On Wednesday, the jubilant city of Bengaluru turned into a scene of chaos as an overwhelming crowd swarmed the stadium to celebrate RCB’s maiden IPL title win. The sight of cricketing superstars like Virat Kohli drew lakhs of fans, far exceeding the stadium’s logistical capacity. The overcrowding led to a stampede that claimed 11 lives and injured over 50 people, several of whom are still receiving treatment in city hospitals.

In a heartfelt post on social media, RCB expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. “The unfortunate incident in Bengaluru yesterday has caused a lot of anguish and pain to the RCB family. As a mark of respect and a gesture of solidarity, RCB has announced a financial support of ₹10 lakh to each of the eleven families of the deceased,” the statement read.

Further, the franchise announced the creation of a special fund titled ‘RCB Cares’, which aims to provide ongoing support to fans who were injured in the incident. “Our fans are the core of our journey. We remain united in grief and are committed to standing with the affected families,” the franchise added.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and issued notices to the state government, demanding a detailed report on the tragedy. The court has scheduled the next hearing for June 10 and emphasized the need to investigate how crowd control failed so drastically during such a high-profile event.

Senior Advocate Arun Shyam, while representing the matter in court, sought clarity on event management, particularly regarding ambulance deployment at Vidhana Soudha and Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner G. Jagadeesha, who is leading the investigation, stated that notices would also be served to several key stakeholders, including the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), RCB management, the police commissioner, and event organizers.

As the city mourns, calls for accountability and improved safety protocols grow louder to ensure such tragedies are never repeated, especially on days meant for celebration.
