As such, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are moving into IPL 2025 under a new leader after parting ways with the man who captained the side for the past three seasons: Faf du Plessis. This development has led many fans and analysts to speculate on the possibility of Virat Kohli returning as the captain for RCB as he left the position three years ago for the team in 2021. The new captain for the Bengaluru-based side has not yet been announced officially.

Addressing the captaincy dilemma, RCB’s Chief Operating Officer, Rajesh Menon, said in an interview with Sports Tak that no decision had been made yet. “Currently, we have not decided anything. We have multiple leaders in the team. 4-5 leaders are there. We have not deliberated what we need to do. We will deliberate, and we will come to a conclusion,” Menon said, keeping the suspense alive.

Kohli, who captained RCB from 2011 to 2021, led the team in 143 matches, securing 66 wins while suffering 70 defeats. Under his leadership, RCB reached the IPL final in 2016, a season where Kohli was in sensational form, amassing 973 runs—the highest ever in a single IPL edition.

In the meantime, RCB went aggressive in IPL 2025 mega auction. It acquired a lot of significant players such as Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Tim David, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jitesh Sharma, Devdutt Padikkal, Josh Hazlewood, Romario Shepherd, Nuwan Thushara, and Suyash Sharma.

Speaking about the team’s auction strategy, Rajesh Menon said RCB were very clear about plugging gaps and strengthening their Indian core. “We were very clear about what kind of gaps we had, the Indian core we needed to build, and the type of bowling attack required to perform at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. That is exactly what we did,” he explained.

Menon went on to explain how there was a perception that RCB just took a back seat on Day 1 of the auction: “People thought we were not participating, but by the end of Day 2, everyone—from fans to experts—recognized that we had covered all the gaps and assembled one of the best squads for IPL 2025.”

With a balanced squad and the question of captaincy still to be answered, all eyes will be on RCB as they prepare for yet another shot at their elusive maiden IPL title.
