In the build-up to IPL 2025, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has already managed to stir up some pre-season banter, cheekily aiming at the Mumbai Indians (MI) and their much-talked-about captaincy saga. Known for their quirky social media presence, RCB’s beloved character, Mr. Nags — portrayed by Danish Sait — didn’t miss the opportunity to add a dash of humour to the mix alongside Rajat Patidar.

In a video posted by RCB, Mr. Nags playfully cornered RCB’s new skipper, Rajat Patidar, with a pointed yet hilarious question. “So, Rajat, you became captain, and all former RCB skippers have given you their approval. Virat messaged you, Faf messaged you… Do you think other teams should’ve followed a similar strategy while announcing their captain?” he asked.

Staying composed, Rajat Patidar responded with a diplomatic, “I’m sorry, I never followed what’s going on and what’s not going on.” Sensing an opportunity, Mr. Nags, with his signature grin, quipped back, “Oh, so innocent, Rajat. You really don’t know? Really? Then why are you smiling? See, basically, he said, ‘Mai nahi Samjha ‘MI.’”

The playful jab was a nod to MI’s turbulent captaincy decision in IPL 2024 when Hardik Pandya took over from Rohit Sharma. The move didn’t sit well with the loyal Mumbai fan base, and Pandya faced considerable backlash, including boos from the crowd. While the decision was intended to bring fresh energy to the team, it sparked a debate that still lingers as MI looks to regain its former dominance.

The banter comes as RCB prepares for their IPL opener against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the iconic Eden Gardens on March 22. Meanwhile, RCB and MI will cross paths on April 7 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai — a venue where MI has often enjoyed the upper hand, winning 19 of their 33 IPL encounters.

With RCB looking to break their title drought under Patidar’s leadership and MI trying to regain stability under Suryakumar Yadav’s stand-in captaincy, the upcoming clash promises to be an exciting showdown. RCB’s witty dig at MI sets the tone for what could be a season filled with intense rivalries, on-field drama, and off-field banter — everything that makes the IPL a captivating spectacle.
