Veteran West Indian all-rounder Andre Russell has opened up on his future in red-ball cricket. The seam-bowling all-rounder has also declared that Test cricket is not his thing as his body cannot keep up with it. The veteran is one of the first choices when it comes to T20s. However, he hasn’t played a Test and has featured in only 17 first-class matches since debuting in 2007 as well. He also hasn’t featured in one since 2014 and is unlikely to do so in the future as well.
Speaking to Britain’s PA News Agency, Russell said: “Red-ball cricket is not my cookie, I don’t think my body will keep up with Test cricket. But those in the team at the moment are fit enough and taking on the challenge.”
However, Andre Russell is currently involved in The Hundred 2024, playing for the London Spirit. He has especially been highly successful in the IPL, playing for Kolkata Knight Riders’ multiple title wins as well. Russell has also won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the award in two seasons as well.

“I don’t think it’s the money, I don’t think money is the issue. Based on the amount of T20 and leagues around the world, I think a lot of players are just not interested in playing Tests. As long as you can do well from contracts outside your nation I think they are going to grab that opportunity but everyone wants to play on the big stage,” he added.
However, Andre Russell shared that the presence of numerous T20 leagues has made players give up on the longer format. Meanwhile, the hard-hitting all-rounder suggested that youngsters will still be ready to play on a stage as big as the World Test Championship (WTC) as well.
“So, if the big stage comes in Test cricket, I know youngsters will be happy to play. I just don’t think it’s about money or anything like that,” Andre Russell concluded.
