Graham Thorpe has played 100 Test matches for England from 1993 to 2005, making 6744 runs. He has also had 16 Test centuries in his career, including a memorable Ashes century on debut, while his highest score was 200. Added to that Test career, Thorpe had a fine first-class record with 21,937 runs for Surrey, also with 49 hundreds at an average of 45.04. He also played 82 One Day Internationals for England, scoring 2380 runs with 21 fifties.

However, his most important service to the game came well after his playing days when, for over a decade now, he has been a coach with the national side, passing on so much knowledge and experience to a new generation of cricketers.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that Graham Thorpe, MBE, has passed away. There seem to be no appropriate words with which to express the deep shock felt upon Graham’s passing. More than one of England’s finest-ever batters, he was a much-loved member of the cricket family and revered by fans all over the world. Today, the cricket world mourns.”

“Our thoughts are with his wife Amanda, his children, father Geoff and all of his family and friends during this unbearably sad time,” thus read the statement from the ECB.

Oli Slipper, Surrey’s chair, reacted with an expression of sorrow at his passing: “Graham is one of the great sons of Surrey, and there is an overwhelming sadness that he will not walk through the gates of the Oval again. He is a legend of Surrey and brought great pride to the club wearing both the Three Feathers and the Three Lions. He made outstanding contributions to the club as a cricketer and as a man, and he will be so sorely missed,” he said.

The achievements of his life’s work and the hundreds of lives he has touched during his career are what will immortalize Thorpe’s legacy. Anybody who has known him, whether on or off the field, will miss him terribly.
