After Ramesh Powar’s term ended at the end of this November, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) didn’t offer him for a contract extension and immediately started the process of finding the new head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team.

While this Friday (December 14) was the deadline to send the application for the head coaching role of Indian women’s cricket team, there are some reports of Gary Kirsten’s application for this role.

According to TOI, a top BCCI source admitted it by quoting, “Yes, Gary has applied for the job.”

The former South African opening batsman Gary Kirsten has a very great relation with India. He was the head coach of the Indian cricket team from 2008 to 2011 and India won their second ICC Cricket World Cup trophy (2011) under his tenure.

Later, Kirsten played the head coaching role for the South African cricket team from June 2011 to August 2013.

Kirsten has also played the head coaching role in the Indian Premier League (IPL). During 2014 and 2015 season, Kirsten was the head coach of Delhi Daredevils (DD) while he is now with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). While in the last season Kirsten played as the batting coach role of RCB, he has been appointed as the head coach of RCB for the IPL 2019 after sacking Daniel Vettori in this August.

If Kirsten becomes the next head coach of Indian women’s cricket team, then he is likely to be unavailable for IPL 2019 unless his terms with the national women team will come to an end at that time.

According to TOI report, Atul Bedade, David Johnson, Rakesh Sharma, Manoj Prabhakar, Owais Shah, Herschelle Gibbs, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Dominic Thornely, Gargi Banerjee, Vidyuth Jaisimha, Colin Siller and Dav Whatmore have also applied for the head coaching role of Indian women’s cricket team along with Ramesh Powar too.

The coaching interview has been scheduled to be held on 20 December at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai.
