Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain, has expressed his confidence in Ajinkya Rahane’s ability to extend his Test career for another couple of years following his resilient innings of 89 runs against Australia in the WTC Final. Rahane made a comeback to the Indian Test side after a 17-month absence, showcasing impressive performances in domestic cricket and the IPL. On the third day of the match, with India struggling at 152/6, the 34-year-old stepped up and played a crucial role in guiding India to a respectable total of 296 in their first innings, forming a vital partnership with Shardul Thakur.
Ricky Ponting Ponting, speaking about Rahane, emphasized that the batsman seized the opportunity and now has a promising chance to extend his Test career. He stated, “He has made the most of his opportunity and that is all you can do. I think there are two more Test matches in the West Indies after this before Rahul and Iyer are back, so he has got a real opportunity to prolong his Test career for another couple of years,” as shared with the ICC.

Having worked together at the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, Ponting praised Rahane’s disciplined approach and was delighted to see him back in action.
Ponting described Rahane as a gentleman with a calm demeanor and highlighted his exceptional work ethic, stating, “He is a lovely guy and a mild-mannered guy and someone who is one of the most disciplined cricketers I have ever worked with. He is always the first one at training and he is always the first one at the gym doing his recovery and rehab.”

Ricky Ponting also expressed his astonishment at Rahane’s absence from the Indian Test team in recent years, mentioning that Rahane’s performance in the IPL played a significant role in his return. He commended Rahane’s impactful innings against Australia and remarked, “Isn’t it amazing now in this modern game. He probably got back into this Indian Test team on the back of some performances in the IPL, so well played to him.”
