Ricky Ponting Promises A New Era For PBKS As Head Coach Following Appointment

Newly appointed head coach Ricky Ponting has promised a revitalized Punjab Kings (PBKS) following his appointment on September 18. After concluding his stint with Delhi Capitals (DC) at the end of IPL 2024, Ponting led the Washington Freedom to an MLC title and now steps in to replace Trevor Bayliss at PBKS.

In an official press release, Ponting expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Mohali-based franchise. The former Australian skipper is eager to take on this new challenge and is keen to reward the loyal fans who have stood by the team over the years.

“I am grateful to Punjab Kings for presenting me with the opportunity to be the new Head Coach. I am excited to take up the new challenge. I had great conversations with the owners and the management about the way forward and was truly elated to see the alignment of our visions for the team. We all want to repay the fans who have stayed with the franchise over the years and we promise that they will see a much different Punjab Kings going forward,” Ricky Ponting said.

Ricky Ponting’s contract with PBKS extends for four years, keeping him with the franchise until 2028. The owners have granted him full authority to build his coaching staff, although the future of the current team, including former head coach Trevor Bayliss, head of cricket development Sanjay Bangar, fast-bowling coach Charl Langeveldt, and spin-bowling coach Sunil Joshi, remains uncertain.

 

This marks the sixth head coach change for Punjab Kings in seven seasons. The team had a disappointing 2024, finishing ninth and failing to make the playoffs since their runner-up finish in 2014. Ponting’s top priority will be player retention as the IPL sets the rules for the 2025 season.

Ponting’s IPL legacy began as a player with Kolkata Knight Riders, then Mumbai Indians, where he transitioned from captain to coach. During his time with Delhi Capitals (2018-2023), he led the team to three consecutive playoffs, including their first-ever IPL final in 2020.
